Educational video

The author of this educational video is Sergey Kozlov, a former officer in the Alpha Group (also known as Spetsgruppa A). This elite counter-terrorism unit is part of the special forces of the FSB (formerly KGB) and its primary functions are counter-terrorist missions and the protection of the Russian leaders and foreign dignitaries. From 1992 to 1997, Mr. Kozlov took active part in ensuring the safety of Russian national VIPs, such as the President and the Prime Minister, as well as foreign leaders visiting Russia.

Mr. Kozlov has authored several books about bodyguard training, among them are «The ABC of a Bodyguard» and «Executive Protection: A Brief Guide».

Currently, he heads a private company specializing in personnel security training

Part 1. One bodyguard

How should hand-to-hand fighting for bodyguards look like?

We consider that it should consist of two main directions: self-defense techniques and techniques for the guarded person protection. These directions must be closely interrelated. That is to say techniques that are taught during self-defense course must suit for the defense of third person as well. And vice versa, the techniques, that are not suitable for defending the client, are forbidden in the individual training.

Scheme “Hit

This scheme for guarded person defense is used in case of sudden attack against the guarded person when there is less than 3 meters between the attacker and the guarded person and you have no time to snatch weapons.

Part 1. One bodyguard

I. Preparatory exercises

1. Psychological preparatory exercises

These exercises are aimed at psychological training of bodyguards to the actions in conditions of firing contact

2. Tactical preparatory exercises (TPE)

The goal of exercises is mastering and perfecting of key details and elements of the scheme of client protection (TPE on the spot; TPE in moving; TPE with the use of shelters; TPE in conditions of low visibility

II. Main exercises

1. Tactical exercises (TE).

Aim of the exercises is working out and further improvement of the schemes of client protection against attack

2. Tactical-psychological exercises.

Aim of the exercises is a psychological training of bodyguards for the client protection against attack with the use of firing arm

III. Situational exercises

Aim of exercises is the improvement of earlier studied schemes of protection in various conditions (3 exercises).

Part 2. Two bodyguards

Tactical exercises

Aim of the exercises is working out and further improvement of the schemes of client protection against attack.

First group of exercises – exercises in the protection of the person guarded by two bodyguards while walking

First exercise. Protection of the client by two bodyguards against attack with assault arms in the absence of close shelters.

Second exercise. Protection of the client by two bodyguards against attack with assault arms with availability of closely-located shelters.

Third exercise. Protection of the client by two bodyguards against attack with assault arms with availability of closely-located shelters in conditions of low visibility.

Fourth exercise. Protection of the client by two bodyguards against attack with assault arms and grenade with availability of closely-located shelters in conditions of low visibility.

Fifth exercise. Protection of the client by two bodyguards against attack with assault arms from different sides while boarding a car.

Sixth exercise. A complex exercise on the basis of all earlier studied exercises.

Second group of exercises – exercises in protection of the person guarded while driving a car.

First exercise. Repel an attack of the client’s car while attacking from the left side (car is stopped).

Second exercise. Repel an attack of the client’s car while attacking from the front (car is stopped).

Third exercise. Repel an attack of the client’s car while attacking from the left side (car is stopped) in the conditions of low visibility.

Fourth exercise. Repel an attack of the client’s car while attacking from the front (car is stopped) in the conditions of low visibility.

Third group of exercises – exercises in the protection of the person guarded by four bodyguards while walking.

First exercise. Protection of the person guarded against attack from the front.

Second exercise. Protection of the person guarded against attack from the rear.

Third exercise. Protection of the person guarded against attack from the front (the client is injured).

Situation 1. Stationary ambush.

2. Turn and withdrawal from the place of attack.
